WLAN test: Who is faster than the Fritz box?

This question must answer the Fritz box 7490 in the test. The competition forms the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and the TP-Link Archer C7. At first glance, not a fair comparison, the Fritzbox 7490 will cost 230 euros and brings a VDSL modem, a DECT base station, two USB ports with version 3.0 and numerous other functions – a complete all-router for the home network.

The Netgear R7000 is just a router, but with striking design – it costs around 160 euros. It is mainly aimed at players and users who download a lot. The TP-Link Archer C7 you get hand for less than 100 euros – a very favorable router given the amenities. In the feature list distinguishes him from R7000 only that it has two USB 2.0 ports, the Netgear router one of the two USB ports works on version 3.0.

As for WiFi, however, they are equal – almost equal. All routers work with the current wireless standard 802.11ac and a 3×3 antenna configuration: So you can simultaneously send and receive three data streams. And since they can do about the two frequencies 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz, the parallel, making the manufacturer the following figures: 450 Mbit / s (3 data streams over 2.4GHz) plus 1300 Mbit / s (3 data streams over 5 GHz ) equal to 1 750 Mbit / s.

Why 11ac Wi-Fi is so fast

Netgear is 1900 Mbit / s for the R7000 to: The Router uses a wireless chip from Broadcom, the BCM4360. This chip uses the 256-QM-modulation of the 11ac standard for the 2.4 GHz frequency and is thus up to 600 Mbit / s reach this frequency – but only if the remote site, these so-called turbo-QAM technology supports. In the routers from AVM and TP-Link sits a WLAN chipset from Qualcomm Atheros.

Tests under laboratory conditions show indeed how quickly a wireless router is – but only in theory. Because almost always interferes with one, usually several neighboring WLANs own radio network and slows its pace. Therefore, we measured under practical conditions – under severe: Ten WLANs at 2.4 GHz and three at 5 GHz jostle in the ether.

In the first round, the router will find but almost ideal conditions: They are allowed to work on the little disturbed 5GHz frequency and are only three meters from the remote site. The Nighthawk is here with 414 Mbit / s with several simultaneous connections well before the Fritzbox 7490 and the Archer C7, which come to around 330 Mbit / s.

In the second test stand apart router and peer around 30 meters and have no visual contact: The result remains almost unchanged – the Nighthawk distanced the competition. The Fritzbox 7490 reached but loose a pace that is sufficient for full HD streaming. For the TP-Link Archer C7 however, the air is already thin.

Let’s go test on 2.4 GHz – still the classic wireless frequency on many laptops, smartphones and tablets are on the road – especially if they are low.

Here goes over the short distance over three meters of the TP-Link router finishing line first. The Archer C7 comes with many sturgeon WLANs cope best and is approximately 30 Mbit / s over the other two routers.

However Sturgeon WLANs and large distance to the remote site are for the TP-Link router too much: He holds more than 30 meters nor the Fritz box a stable connection to the remote site. When R7000 is sufficient nevertheless still for 25 Mbit / s.

For the high speed, the strong dual CoreCPU the Netgear router is responsible, among other things, the clocked at up to 1GHz, while it brings the two-Kerner in the Fritz box only to 600 MHz.

The Netgear Nighthawk R700 is the pace-king. It provides the highest speed and copes better than the competition with heavy conditions. A definite recommendation so if it’s all about wireless pace – but the Nighthawk is not cheap.

Therefore, speaking in the standings also very much for the other router: In Fritzbox 7490 superb service not at the expense of a competitive wireless speed, the TP-Link you do the price not detract. And both work more economical than the R7000 – the TP-Link very clearly and even the Fritzbox undercutting despite the essential amenities to Netgear R7000 in the power consumption.
