VRidge: no need to be rich to enjoy your games in virtual reality

To take advantage of virtual reality at its best, it is necessary today to spend several hundred euros in helmets, and nearly as much in hardware to run the whole. If you have the machine VRidge and Cardboard deal simulate a Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

With the release of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, 2016 is undoubtedly the year of virtual reality. For those who do not want to spend that much, however, there are mobile alternatives such as Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR. In order to create a bridge between these two worlds and to satisfy those who are not willing to buy an expensive helmet RiftCat offers VRidge, a service that aims to bridge the gap between the two worlds.

VRidge works in two steps, with one side of a server for Windows machines (available on the official website) and the other of an Android application. Once paired the two parties on the same local network, it becomes possible to streamer or its Oculus SteamVR titles directly on his phone to enjoy using a mobile headset.

Designed originally for the Oculus Rift only, VRidge recently added compatibility with SteamVR games. However some users note the presence of bugs and compatible games. So do not expect the same experience, but it can at least afford to give a taste of the experience you can get if you decide to splurge on one of the two main VR helmets on the market.

With RC2, CyanogenMod goes Android 2.3.3!

February 16, 2011, CyanogenMod 7 just going on its first release candidate (RC1) for the Android Gingerbread release. Now we continue on the Release Candidate 2 (RC2), which brings a lot of stability.

The family project participants Cyanogen has finally managed to make a second point of stability to the system by completing the Release Candidate 2 (RC2) on almost all of the integrated terminals. The missing terminals will quickly be updated in the next few hours.

The changes are rather minor, but as you quoted earlier, stability is waiting for you, providing a more complete version with a lot of bug fixes. That we really respect but the HTC Evo 4G would have a problem with the GPS. Moreover, going from version 2.3.2 to 2.3.3.

If you know the code name of your androphone, it goes directly to mirror.teamdouche. Otherwise, visit the Cyanogen forum or on our forum in the appropriate section on your smartphone.

Wear Snapdragon 2100: Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 abandons the connected watches

Qualcomm has just unveils Snapdragon SoC Wear 2100 to connected objects, and more particularly connected watches. So just replace the aging Snapdragon 400 that was not suitable for this type of product. In the program, a smaller size and lower power consumption.

Article updated on 11/02/2016 at 15:15 with the technical information

Currently the vast majority of watches under Android Wear features a Snapdragon 400, with the exception of the Motorola Moto 360 which has a Texas Instrument OMAP SoC. Both chips have not at all been designed to be integrated in connected watches. The size and consumption are not necessarily appropriate. To replace the Snapdragon 400 in connected watches, Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon Wear 2100, and the Snapdragon platform Wear. The latter will facilitate the design of watches connected by OEM, without having to create a custom PCB.

A smaller and less greedy chip

Snapdragon 2100 Wear integrates four Cortex-A7 cores running between 800 and 1200 MHz LPDDR3 assisted by the 400 MHz of the 4.5 eMMC for storage and an Adreno 304 as a GPU that is limited to the support of a definition 640 x 480 pixels for displays. The chip is 30% smaller than the Snapdragon 400 to allow finer development of shows and it consumes 25% less energy for greater autonomy. The chip also integrates a hub of ultra-low power sensors that could provide more details on the sensor face a Snapdragon 400, at least if the software part follows. Snapdragon 2100 Wear integrate GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and 4G modem (Snapdragon X5) with very low power to maintain connectivity throughout the day.

LG already on the deck

The chip is available in two versions: with or without modem, using the same design, to enable manufacturers to easily offer and cost two different versions of their watches with or without 4G connectivity. The SoC supports Android and Android Wear, and is available today for manufacturers. LG took the opportunity to announce that new connected watches incorporating a Snapdragon Wear 2100 are scheduled to arrive during the year.

Volvo ROAR: a garbage truck and robot assisted by a drone

Volvo, Renova and students from three universities collaborated to floor on a garbage truck goes scavengers. These are indeed replaced by a robot that picks up the trash, assisted by a drone that makes a location scouting.

The future is automation. Drones are becoming more independent, including the new Phantom 4 DJI, like cars, like the Tesla Model S with its Autopilot feature or new Volvo PilotAssist II. This is also Volvo Group who comes to work with Renova, a company specializing in the design of refuse trucks, as well as students from three different universities. The goal was to create a robot capable of picking up the garbage in the street and then unload the truck. They managed, with the help of a drone.

A robot and AR.Drone

In practice, the robot takes the place of garbage at the back of the truck. When it stops, a UAV (here a Parrot AR.Drone), present on the roof of the truck takes off to map the locations and mark the position of bins relative to the robot. The information is then sent to the robot, which can move toward the trash pick up and bring them to empty the inside of the garbage truck. The entire operation is not yet fully autonomous since found a driver in the truck which oversees the entire operation from the screens in the cabin.

Safety has not been put aside since the robot has multiple sensors (cameras, LIDAR, etc.) to identify and avoid objects that could be on his way. When the garbage load operation, it will stop if a pedestrian gets too close to the truck.

For now, the ROAR project is a prototype, and doubt we make it happen in this form. There is however likely that in the coming years, collecting junk becomes increasingly automated although in the specific example, the robot is much slower than a human.

Virgin Mobile launches new packages and the Galaxy in September

1 week ago, I received one after two press releases Virgin Mobile announced new packages “unlimited”. Virgin Mobile is an MVNO (host operators – SFR, BT and Orange – rent their network) which runs on the Orange network and includes 1.2 million customers since its launch. Since the Board of Monitors (July 2008) had eased tariffs between MVNO and operator, Virgin preparing packages with unlimited EVERYTHING, so from June 17 here a package with SMS, MMS, Data, Calls, Emails + Messenger … unlimited, 24/7 for only € 89.90.

Another package blocked with 2 hours, 5 unlimited numbers (calls + SMS), data + unlimited email for 29.90 euros per month could attract more than one, including students. This is not everything, but I’ll let you see it on the official press release.

Another big surprise is that with these packages + a few euros a month (mobile Grant), Virgin Mobile will offer the Galaxy from the beginning of September (due out this summer at Bouygues Telecom). This would also mean that the Samsung Galaxy – or i7500 (table comparing Android mobile) could be proposed at Orange to return too. The exclusive Samsung Galaxy would be only 2 months if Bouygues Telecom meets the announced dates and communicate a little more …

Virgin Mobile is not the only MVNO offered at all unlimited plan because Coriolis will offer voice and data packages completely unlimited 24h / 24, 7/7 … to 69.90 euros per month.

MVNOs will perhaps finally democratize unlimited calls and data as they did for SMS. Finally, Lagarde and Chatel ministers should first take care of the 4th license and finally promote real competition, especially that Virgin Mobile would be interested in this license. Stay tuned…

Virgin Mobile launches package to 9.99 euros

After B & YOU and package to 9.99 euros / month unlimited everything (and 20 MB of data), Free and package 2 euros / month, the first alternative operator FullMVNO has unveiled the package to 9.99 euros with the ‘unlimited…

Free (Iliad) has revised its offer to 2 euros / month this morning that has not stopped Virgin Mobile to announce the time its offer to 9.99 euros / month with unlimited calls and SMS and 100 MB Internet the additional MB is charged at the same price as B & YOU: € 0.05 / MB. For cons, the Virgin Mobile package offers only 3G (384 kbps) while Free Mobile, Prixtel, Zero Forfait, B & YOU, Sosh – offer 3G + and H + according to the same operators.

To compare, Joe Mobile (SFR) is $ 15 / month for unlimited calls, sms / mms unlimited and 1GB of data. Without overtaking, without obligation. Sosh (Orange) also has a similar package.

Operators engage a real price war. Who will be able to resist?

Xiaomi announces Mi TV 2 55-inch … less than 800 euros

Xiaomi promised a wave of ads to celebrate its fifth anniversary. The Chinese firm has introduced its latest Smart TV to date, the Mi TV 2 with a 4K 55-inch screen. As always with the brand, a product has very low price considering its features.

Grosse ad day for Xiaomi, which has not only formalized its least expensive smartphone to date. The Chinese firm, which already has two TV screens stamped Mi TV 2, has just formalize a third. Like its other products, it displays a value on paper unbeatable.

Also a screen 40-inch Full HD and a slab of 49 inches 4K, so here is a Mi TV 2 55 inches whose characteristics are very close to it. Xiaomi has however emphasized the delicacy of his camera, from 15.5 mm version 49 inches to 15.2 mm for a screen edge reduced to 6 mm. The TV adopts LED Ultra HD (4K) from Samsung under which we find a Mstar 6A928 processor compatible with the H.265 format 60 fps (Quad 1.4 GHz) coupled with a Mali-760 MP4 GPU and 2 GB RAM. Mi TV 2 also has 8 GB of storage and comes with a notable accessory: a sound bar with 8 speakers and a subwoofer, the all-aluminum and certified Dolby MS12. If Xiaomi has not detailed the OS that drives its smart TV, we can already expect the integration of MiOS, its operating system based on Android 4.4 KitKat, as is the case with his Mi TV 2 40 inches, which should in future switch to Lollipop.

As always, it is in terms of price Xiaomi stands out: it will offer its Chinese customers this screen priced at 4999 yuan, or about 750 euros before taxes.

Virtual Reality: Insights on the various helmets coming this year

comments

After years of promising, the first reality helmets are finally available. If, on the bottom, they all offer more or less the same thing – allow to plunge into experiments in virtual reality – all also have technical features, conceptual and tariffs of their own. Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive VR and Playstation, here are the basics of what you need to know about the main helmets of virtual reality of the moment.

For this first comparison, we selected the main virtual reality helmets for the general public. In 2016, they are four in number. The Gear VR, the most accessible of our selection, is as interesting material input. The Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are the two heavyweights of this year, but both require a significant investment. Finally, the Playstation VR, is expected for the end of the year, for his developers, and therefore more games able to attract the general public. Here they are face to face in a summary table

We can not say it enough, this is a first generation of virtual reality helmets. Embedded technologies are still very young, particularly with regard to the screens, these helmets are to become obsolete very quickly. There is no doubt that they will probably be exceeded in one year, if not less.

Samsung Gear VR: An excellent introduction

The Gear VR with a trendy smartphone.

Samsung does not hide, the main asset of the Gear VR is its price of 99 euros. For this price, you can get your hands on a “shell” that is to say without a helmet screen, very light, which will be connected a smartphone Galaxy S or Galaxy Note (and only them, the other smartphones from other manufacturers are not compatible). This will make both desktop office and hardware support.

The user will be dependent on this phone, which, once an application has launched virtual reality, tends to heat quickly and lose its precious battery percentages. It is also an advantage since, unlike other headphones in this roundup, the VR Gear is the only wireless device.

The Gear VR has a touch pad to navigate menus without controller.

Even though the experience may seem at first limited by the design and power of the connected smartphone headset, the VR Gear is now the very best deal for virtual reality qualitatively. Because to design the helmet, Samsung has partnered with Oculus. All the software part thus comes Oculus and it shows: most applications are quality and it is possible to find happiness both in the field of video, video games or porn if you’re a little handyman .

Testing the Samsung Gear VR

Obviously we are still far from the experience propose three other virtual reality helmets. There are no user tracking in space, sometimes it is mandatory to have a Bluetooth joystick to enjoy games and the field of vision is a little smaller than the competition. But we insist on this point, the quality of the content offered is often such that the helmet always surprises those who have never experienced virtual reality of their lives.

Strong points

a reasonable price (99 euros)

comprehensive application catalog

comfortable and lightweight headset

Application quality

Weak points

Necessarily require a high-end smartphone

Necessarily more limited than the “real” virtual reality helmets

Field of view a little weak

Oculus Rift: the pioneer that refers

The Oculus Rift.

If virtual reality is a reality in 2016, it is thanks to the Oculus Rift, the helmet by which all began, there are now just over 4 years. This is by far the helmet based on the most experienced development team and the most talented in the field. Thank you Facebook, which bought the company 2 billion and John Carmack, who joined the ranks of its developers.

And it shows with the CV1 Version (consumer version 1) of the helmet, released a few days ago in the world: the helmet is lightweight, its displays are probably the very best at the moment and it is also the one headset for this selection have included headphones directly to the helmet structure. Note: to run, it is mandatory to have a gaming PC muscular genre.

The Oculus Rift and some accessories included in the box.

The Oculus Rift is the only helmet has integrated headphones.

CV1 version is the most complete version of the helmet of the US company. The latency is lowest with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and his field of vision now reached 110 degrees. The helmet includes not only sensors to detect head movements of the user, but it also uses an external camera, located in front of the user to more precisely tracker movement. Ultimately, it should also be possible to move in space, like the HTC Vive.

Finally, unlike the latter, the Rift does not have its own controllers, capable of being trackées in space, but comes with a joystick Xbox One. By the end of the year it should nevertheless have the Touch Oculus, joysticks no son capable of simulating the hands of the user.

Joysticks for interacting with virtual reality, the Oculus Touch, will arrive later in the year

Oculus has also taken care to develop a (small) game catalog for the launch of his helmet. They are generally all very well optimized and quite successful, but we must admit that none of them is able to captivate a large audience. Among the compelling experiences, we note well or Elite Dangerous Project Cars, a game space simulation and simulation racing cars, but they are too demanding games to be affordable by everyman. Minecraft however, should soon be compatible with the headset.

Which operator offered the best 4G LTE in December?

The four French operators make war on the deployment of 4G. Real business issue, each hope to succeed before the other. But what about the quality of the network? Because a greater number of 4G antennas do not necessarily mean higher throughput. This is what appears in December, in the investigation of the site ZDNet and its partner, the 4Gmark editor.

Who had the best 4G in December? More importantly, Free Mobile has he bitten off more than it can chew by launching December 3 its mobile broadband? In response, the site Zdnet relies on its partnership with 4Gmark editor, which is developing a mobile network application assessment smartphone on which it is installed. For the last month of December on the 4G network, 24,168 tests were carried out via this application. What are the numbers?

Overall, the three incumbent operators (Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR) are doing pretty well. Orange has an average download speed of 36.3 Mb / s, SFR 22.3 Mb / s and Bouygues Telecom 21.5 Mb / s. On average upload speed is always orange which holds the upper pad (13.6 Mb / s), followed by Bouygues (11.07 Mb / s) and SFR (9.6 Mb / s). And Free Mobile in? In its first month, the fourth operator is behind: an average download speed of 17.8 Mb / s and an average upload speed of 6.1 Mb / s.

As noted in 4Gmark analysts, quoted by Zdnet, “it would be simplistic to speak only of lower average rates as construction at Free is disparate. In 4G LTE to an expected level (greater than 20 Mbps) only in Paris, Montpellier and Brest in the early days, one can follow the 4G network “décontraster” day after day. Sign of a faster than expected commercial launch. ” The rise of 4G Free would be ongoing. Difficult anyway to see a trend in these figures since it is the first month of existence of broadband for Free Mobile. Still, the launch of LTE seems to be a success for Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR as these have all announced having crossed the million subscribers to 4G.

TTS: Why I decided to connect my house?

I wake up at four o’clock, I Master Gims spitting in the ears, the lights flash. My alarm playing tricks on me. My house has a virus. Technically, it is a malware. You get the picture, it triggers the alarm with music that I blacklisted, he takes a picture of me when I get out of the shower and uploads it to Facebook. No big deal. Go back to sleep would be possible, but I think about why I decided to connect my house?

Tech Talk Show (TTS, for short) is a new issue of under 30 minutes (theoretically) with this driver. The idea is pretty simple, discuss the tech in a relaxed atmosphere, without taking the head, surrounded by some of the eLaptopComputer.com team or guests depending on the topic.

Of course, this is a format that will evolve, we wanted given her own style (hipster nerd glasses, shirts and so on), and we have already planned some changes and adjustments for the second episode. Before the end of the year, you find a podcast (RSS), in addition to the video format on YouTube and audio format on Soundcloud. Good viewing !

This week, an introductory episode to the connected home, where we discuss light way home automation but also all the entertainment side. In this episode, Vincent and POD around the table, with Ulrich presentation.
